چکیده

A 2.4-year controlled-cooling-rate experiment was carried out to investigate the dependence of hydrous species concentrations in rhyolitic melt on cooling rate. The experiment allows us to obtain speciation for a cooling rate of 1.68 · 10 6 K/s, extending previous experimental data by two orders of magnitude. Furthermore, a viscosity as high as 10 Pa s is inferred for this hydrous rhyolitic melt with 0.85 wt% total H2O at 671 K. The results are applied to examine whether a geospeedometry model and four viscosity models may be extrapolated to slower cooling rates or lower temperatures. Two of the viscosity models and the geospeedometry model can be extrapolated by two orders of magnitude upwards in terms of viscosity or downwards in terms of cooling rate. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Silicate Melt Properties and Volcanic Eruptions

[1] Knowledge about the properties of silicate melts is needed by volcanologists and petrologists to evaluate the dynamics of volcanic eruptions and magmatic processes. These properties include the solubility and diffusivity of volatile components in silicate melts, silicate melt viscosity, and the fragmentation condition. Data and models of each property are reviewed and assessed. For rhyoliti...

Viscosity of hydrous rhyolitic melts inferred from kinetic experiments, and a new viscosity model

Viscosity of hydrous silicate melts is essential in modeling the dynamics of magma transport and volcanic eruptions. Numerous experimental measurements of viscosity, as well as viscosity models, have been published. For general melt compositions, the classic models of either Bottinga and Weill (1972) or Shaw (1972) are still used, not because they are reliable, but because of the extreme diffic...

Hydrous species geospeedometer in rhyolite: Improved calibration and application

The hydrous species geospeedometer is based on the homogeneous interconversion reaction between molecular H2O species and OH species in silicate melts and glasses. Here we report new data for the calibration of the geospeedometer in rhyolitic glass, extending the coverage of quench rate to 94 K/s and of H2Ot to 7.7 wt.% by using a piston-cylinder apparatus at low pressures (200–500 MPa) to prev...

The speciation of dissolved H2O in dacitic melt

We report the first systematic study of H2O speciation in dacitic melt with total dissolved H2O ranging from 1.4 to 2.6 wt%. Samples were heated in a one-atmosphere tube furnace at 480–590 °C for certain durations and then quenched in water or air. Species concentrations were measured with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. At a given temperature, the equilibrium constant for the r...

Reactive infiltration of hydrous melt above the mantle transition zone

[1] Seismic studies repeatedly image a low‐velocity layer overlying the mantle transition zone in tectonic settings ranging from subduction zones to continental cratons. This layer has been hypothesized to result from the presence of a dense partial melt formed by dehydration melting as relatively wet transition zone material is advected by convection currents into the low‐water‐solubility uppe...
